Ruth is the first woman to receive a black belt at International Self Defense. She began training at ISD at the age of 10 because it looked fun. She quickly discovered the advantages that come from being a skilled martial artist and took every opportunity to learn from the rich history and traditions ISD has inherited.
In addition to training with the Mechlings, she was able to meet and learn from many of the masters and grandmasters who influenced the style and training techniques of ISD.
After growing up in the dojo, Ruth tested and refined her skills by training and competing with elite level competitors around the world. She has competed in Judo, Submission Grappling, Muay Thai, Karate, and Tai Chi. She has been an instructor at ISD since 2009.
